‘Sex : Self : Spirit’ by David England

In his new article ‘Sex : Self : Spirit’, psychosynthesis psychotherapist David England draws an affinity between therapeutic approaches in Shamanic psychology and psychosynthesis psychotherapy. By comparing the ‘Energy Map’ of Shamanic psychology and the ‘Egg Diagram’ model created by Dr. Roberto Assagioli England outlines a new dynamic model through which, he believes, we can better realise the whole human personality and reframe the understanding of the ‘Self’ in psychosynthesis. He writes that:

“…Shamanic and Contemporary Psychology can be integrated in psychotherapeutic practice, in particular by: the inclusion of some powerful psychological models based on the Shamanic Medicine Wheel; employing a present-day application of the technique of the shamanic journey as a way of communicating in consciousness with the unconscious mind. This article seeks to further the same purpose.” – David England, ‘Sex : Self : Spirit’.

England argues that sexuality in Shamanic psychology is comparable to the Self in psychosynthesis – an “energy for life”. In this model, sexuality is the driving force behind our creative impulses and relationships with ourselves, others and the wider world. By healing the Self we can reconnect with our latent sexuality, enabling ourselves to fulfil our potential.
